Boston University’s The Daily Free Press launches a podcast that envisions a more fair admissions system

BOSTON, MA, March 04, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ — College admissions aren’t fair. Could they ever be? Created and hosted by Edward Sturm, “Fair Admission” is a nine-episode limited series podcast that will delve into inequities in college admissions beyond the recent admissions scandals. The Daily Free Press, the independent student newspaper of Boston University, launches the podcast this week with the first two episodes releasing Thursday, March 4, 2021.

The college admissions process is touched by nearly all parts of American society – from systemic racism and intergenerational wealth to standardized testing and athletic recruiting. Because a college education is an essential determinant of lifelong wealth, who goes to college and where they go matters, but there remains a long way to go before the system resembles anything fair. Combining interviews with higher education professionals, students and prominent authors from across the nation, “Fair Admission” is a new podcast that addresses all different parts of a single question: how can we make a more fair admissions system?

“Through the pursuit of ‘Fair Admission’,” podcast creator Sturm says, “I have come to understand questions of equity in higher education in a new way and learned how we might move forward toward a more just system. I can’t wait to share this with listeners.”

“The SAT has a profoundly ugly past,” said guest Jay Rosner, Executive Director of the Princeton Review Foundation. But the racist history of standardized testing is only one of the many ways that college admissions foster inequity. Follow “Fair Admission” to hear from such experts as Dan Golden, author of “The Price of Admission,” Tufts University Professor Natasha Warikoo, author of “The Diversity Bargain” and many others as they weigh in on the disparities of the current U.S. admissions system and ways to achieve a more equitable approach in the future.

“Fair Admission” premieres March 4 and is available on Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts and other major platforms.

“Fair Admission” is produced in association with The Daily Free Press, the independent student newspaper at Boston University. For more information, please visit or contact Edward Sturm at 479-366-6443 or [email protected].
