Florida personal injury firm puts its money where its mouth is, contributing to efforts to supply food to an unprecedented number of Florida families struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic
The donation comes at a time when Tampa Bay, like most of the country, continues to reel from the economic impact of the coronavirus.
“COVID-19 has amplified the importance of organizations like Feeding Tampa Bay, whose sole focus is to help people get the food they need,” said Scott Distasio, founder of Distasio Law Firm. He explained how state-ordered business closures, layoffs, and extended school breaks have intensified the community’s hunger problem and increased the number of families who need help gaining access to meals.
“As a personal injury firm that serves Tampa-area clients, it saddens us to see families struggle with something as fundamental to survival as eating a meal,” Distasio said. “We want to do our part, as members of this community, to provide some relief.
How Feeding Tampa Bay Helps Feed Those in Need
Feeding Tampa Bay has long worked to assist individuals struggling to feed their families. Over the course of the past month, the program has ramped up its program to address the mounting needs of local residents.
The organization doubled the number of weekly meals it distributes—from one million to two million meals during the month of May. They prepare 500 meals each day at their two feeding sites, which amounts to 350,000 meals to date. Feeding Tampa Bay also partners with a number of restaurants to feed 15,000 people per week, and they launched five weekly MEGA drive-thru distribution sites to feed almost 10,000 families per week.
Besides drive-thru food pantries and to-go groceries via Publix Community Market, the program has activated child meal sites in four counties to supply 245,000 meals to children. Feeding Tampa Bay has also delivered more than 50,000 meals to senior sites in the past month.
How to Donate to Feeding Tampa Bay
Individuals and organizations who would like to join Distasio Law Firm in donating to Feeding Tampa Bay can give either a one-time gift or a recurring monthly donation at the organization’s website.
For young Floridians who want to try their hand at philanthropy, Feeding Tampa Bay’s “Changemaker” program encourages children ages 6-13 to join and help increase awareness of community issues. The program is a great way to teach kids financial literacy and social responsibility. Learn more on the Feeding Tampa Bay website.
